SOHO Endorsment

Normal Heights Community Planning Group endorses Save Our Heritage Organization.

Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO), formed in 1969, is the only countywide historic preservation organization dedicated to managing and operating historic sites and resources, and to protecting and preserving the historic architectural and cultural resources of our region.

SOHO advocates both proactively and in response to specific threats to historic cultural and architectural resources, by providing effective advocacy, working to advance strong preservation laws and embracing “adaptive reuse” policies.

Adaptive reuse is the process that adapts buildings for new uses while retaining their historic features. Examples of adaptive reuse in San Diego include the retention of historic buildings in Petco Park. Adaptive reuse has also been utilized in the construction of affordable housing developments. Importantly, historic preservation is not at odds with business or housing development.

An important component of NHCPG’s mission statement is “responsible economic development that supports historic preservation”. As government policy undermines or removes protections for historic structures, it is both timely and appropriate for the group to endorse and support the work of SOHO and to recognize our common goals in preserving the history and character of Normal Heights.
